Clever, adventurous and full of inspiring lessons about new applications for existing “inventions”, this book should resonate with children everywhere. Amazingly, V. R. Duin takes a hardy troop of armadillos and renders them both lovable and cuddly.

In this story, V R Duin uses rhymes and a sense of fun to tell a tale of animals fighting over territory and finding their niches. The armadillos are useful to the farmer because they eat bugs. The fox is not useful, so the farmer shoos it away. But, like any villain worth his pages in a story, the fox comes back.
The armadillos learn to roll, and then they learn to bowl. Thus, in this story, a skill developed for fun becomes useful in defense. I think that’s a positive idea to teach children.
I don’t know if 3-banded armadillos (the only kind that can roll into balls) have ever used their bodies like bowling balls to knock over foxes like bowling pins. But an armadillo weighs about 8 pounds and a fox weighs about 10 pounds, so it is possible.

GUIDANCE COUNSELOR USING BOOK FOR BULLYING:
I am a GUIDANCE COUNSELOR and am using this book to teach my students, how to deal with BULLYING and PROBLEM SOLVING. Also, I am including some other subjects such as COOPERATION and team work for the benefit of our environment which is part of being a good citizen and conservation of our planet. (I. am using this book with a great activity book from the Forestry Department but it is not needed.)
I also always include some background information because I like my students to learn about many things, such as mammals, the type of environment armadillos live in and their UNIQUE way of self-defense (so cute curling into a ball), geography where they are commonly found.
I also use this book just like I did with V. R. Duins book The Flight of Little Ray (compared them to sharks because they are made of cartilage and where we have cartilage, but they have differences in personality and defense (like we are all different but also the same) where they are commonly found in warmer water and where and how the role the equator affects the world’s climate.) I also introducing any vocabulary they might not know or completely understand). I believe any teacher or parent could use this book for many subjects, Language Arts, Science, Geography and Character Traits.
I use this book to teach my students many things in an entertaining way. I believe it is a wonderful teaching tool for Teachers or Parents to teach and talk about many subjects. All of V. R,DUIN’S (Goopy Ghost series, too)books make my career as a Guidance Counselor (Teaching Character Traits and other subjects) a lot more fun and enhances my teaching lessons. I believe any Teacher or Parent will find this book very educational. Besides educating my students, they also love, love the stories and illustrations. When I tell my students their Learning Goal and mention we will be using one of V.R. Duin’s book they are always excited and happy. Honestly. I believe if you buy this book you will see everything I just said is accurate !!!

This is an excellently written, brilliantly illustrated children’s book that expresses in an easy to understand way how families can come together to solve a problem and through that cooperation, be a blessing to others in overcoming a shared adversary. I love this book and highly recommend it to families and schools to teach children the importance of not discounting children’s simplistic, but often wise suggestions in facing challenges.

What a wonderful opportunity this colorful, playful story gives us to explore a little of the small family farm. In the whimsical tale we discover a family of armadillos have nested down on a quiet, cozy farm. Armadillos can be a nuisance because they dig so many holes and even eat plants farmers need. But they can also be beneficial since they gobble up plenty of pesty insects. Farmers struggle with balancing the two traits. Will the armadillos be allowed to stay?
Ma, Pa, Sis, Boom and Ba, our clever armadillo friends, may have just solved the problem. Read the story to find how they managed to chase away the wily fox. Snugly settled in their prickly sticky nettle patch atop a hill the farmers can’t plant, both the farmers and the armadillos are content.
This is a fun little tale. Your young ones will love the colors, and giggle with the antics of the armadillo “dolls”. And parents will love the opportunity to share some teachable moments.

A chance to learn from little people and animals! A brood of armadillos living in a den previously belonging to a fox on the top of a hill frolic… A grounding work, beneath the surface. Foxy ‘dillo fun for everyone: The Foxy Armadillos has great rhythmic flow, making it fun to read out loud to my three kids ages 1, 3, and 5 (who has autism). They really enjoy this book, it almost seems better the second time around as they have learned from the previous reading about Armadillos and engage even more with the story the more I read it to them. I also recommend trying other books by V. R. Duin, my kids have enjoyed them all so far and they all have the same great flow and beautifully done illustrations.

My boy loved the illustrations, he loves drawing and building things.
