V. R. Duin is an excellent author of Children’s Books. The Goopy Ghost Series of books are written in a way to keep children interested as well as to help teach them important life lessons. I personally know that these books are being used in schools and added to school libraries across the country. Besides writing excellent books, V. R. Duin donates a lot of time to children, making appearances at schools to read her books. She truly cares about the children’s education. I highly recommend these books to parents, grand-parents, uncles and aunts.

After the Carolinas tornado outbreak of 2011, I needed a book where I could expose fears children may have with weather. It was my hope as we exposed these fears kids would be able to open up a little more about weather disasters. Choosing the Goopy Ghost is a home run for getting kids to a place where they can open up about their storm fears. It’s my job as a Meteorologist to find ways to turn their fears into a positive. Whether I teach them more about weather, storm spotting, and getting involved in the weather community. Taking a fear and turning it into a positive is a rewarding experience and the Goopy Ghost series is a perfect way to accomplish this task.

“Thanks is not bound in any way.
It isn’t tied to a certain day.
It isn’t tied to just one place.
Thanks has its very own grace.”
Just as Ma and Pa Brown prepare for their Thanksgiving celebration by picking out a couple of pumpkins for their pies, it begins to rain. Goopy is outside and getting wet when Pa Brown invites him inside their home to dry. The rain turns from sprinkles to torrential rain and now the Browns are worried about their animals. Grateful Goopy helps bring the animals in to safety. All is going well when suddenly the house is lifted up and carried off in a flood.
When matters are finally righted, including a new spot for their home high up a hill where the flood waters won’t intrude, they celebrate. I can just imagine how much gratitude they felt after the flood was over. This book gives us an opportunity to remind our children that bad things happen to good people. Even when children are very young, they can be taught what to do in emergencies, how to look for the good in every circumstance, and how to develop an attitude of gratitude and helpfulness. This is a good book to start a discussion with your children.

I love Goopy. This is my favorite of his stories. It is set in a vanishing part of our history: the family farm. If the book had no other value whatsoever this would make it a great book for kids. It is an kind introduction to a disappearing way of life. But so many other lessons are included in the lovely poetry and beautiful art within these pages. Compassion, friendship, and loyalty are clearly modeled for a world where they are also, sadly, vanishing. A great read with lots of lessons for children and adults alike. I recommend it highly!

“The Goopy Ghost at Thanksgiving” by V.R.Duin is one of my favorite books; its message that “Thanks is not bound in any way/ It isn’t tied to a certain day;” is a beautifully written reminder of how much both children and adults have to be grateful for.
Gratitude is one theme; Goopy’s benevolent character and goofy grin as well as the clever rhymes chase all the spectre’s away (except for Goopy, of course) when fears of what is in the closet or under the bed haunt more sensitive children.
My grand-daughter. fearless and friendly, accompanied me to the doctor’s office yesterday along with her beloved Goopy Ghost; she is much braver than I am!
When Evelyn saw a young boy her age with his mom, she was elated! When she tried to share her “Goopy” with the little boy his mother grew alarmed; her child was terrified of ghosts and, if that wasn’t bad enough, the thunderstorm brewing outside was making him a nervous wreck; he was not the only one! His mother told me of a storm that flooded their house; she wanted to talk and soon we were engrossed in a conversation. And we were not the only ones! Two children sat side-by-side with Goopy entertaining both of them; they never noticed the downpour outside!
All in all, for a Dr. visit, it was a very good day…A little boy found a book he really loved as well as a new friend; and Goopy worked his magic once again as his mom left with the title of the books; a promise for Fan of the Week, the name of the author and is probably reading this now!!
Cheers, Goopy
Your fan,
willow
