I received the Goopy Ghost at Valentine’s Day just in time to read to my daycare children. The children loved this book and had so many questions about Goopy Ghost. The story was adorable and I would recommend it to all my friends. I can’t wait to order more Goopy Ghost books. Everyone at Tractors and Tulips Daycare loved this book.

The Goopy Ghost at Valentine’s Day by V.R. Duin and Illustrated by Bonnie LeMaire is a silly little rhyming story about a little ghost who searches for a friend on this holiday. The goofy illustrations are delightful and colorful. Your little children will love the silly absurdity of this book, which is one of a series based on the holidays.

    “That friends and family
    Matter the most
    Is equally true
    For a little ghost.”

The crux of this story about Goopy Ghost can be summed up neatly in the above couplet. Friendship and family. One thing about most holidays is their ability to either amplify our abundance of relationships with family and friends or point out our lack of them. For those who do not have many family and/or friends, holidays can be supremely lonely. This is the case with the Goopy Ghost. Valentine’s Day was nearing and Goopy had no one with whom to share it.

As a former teacher and homeschool mom, I realize that friendship is something we need to teach our children about as early as possible. We are their nurturers and friendship does not come easily to everyone. This book could serve as a great launch in a discussion about loneliness, how to get friends and be a friend, and how friendship comes with its ups and downs. Goopy does not sit around feeling sorry for himself; he turns to people he knows and asks for help. With his helper, he goes and does something positive. He makes a friend.

This is yet another treasure in the world of Goopy Ghost! As Valentine’s Day is close one must find a special friend. Of course, with the help of Cupid, Goopy did.

At first to their surprise, they found that they were not quite alike. This is a good reminder that friends come in all shapes, colors and sizes.

Open your heart and mind to new friends and you will find we all want to just be friends. And that is what matters most in the end!!

It’s nearing Valentine’s Day and the Goopy Ghost hasn’t a soul mate with whom to celebrate. So, Mercury, Mars and Cupid give the lonesome Goopy Ghost all the help needed to track down a kindred spirit–especially since it’s the dead of winter with nary a pumpkin patch in sight. While it’s true there’s no chance of tracking down a pumpkin seed in February’s freeze, Cupid focuses his efforts on the Southern Hemisphere in hope that friendship blooms. First, in this case, it bursts and sends Goopy and Cupid on a recovery mission. Ultimately, there’s a lesson here too; making friends can take some doing, but it’s worth it!

I highly recommend all of the Goopy Ghost series. We need one for 4th of July!!

I purchased this as a birthday present for my 3-year-old granddaughter. Of course, I had to read it before I mailed it to her. I thought the book was well written, the characters priceless, and the illustrations are about the cutest thing I’ve seen in a long time. Two thumbs up to the author and the illustrator for producing such a fun book for young readers.

How many kids come home from school in low spirits? I know when I was the age Goopy’s books are written for, I felt I didn’t have a “ghost” of a chance to make new friends and just dreaded the “Valentine’s Day Party” since I was a Navy brat and moved from school to school before having a chance to make really close friends. I felt there was no one else like me and dreaded bringing home an empty bag compared to the other kids’ special cards and candies.

When I began teaching school, I saw the sad faces and stoic little smiles; it was heart-wrenching. I felt as if all the years had just dropped away and I was that third-grade child…on the outside, looking in.

That is why V.R.Duin’s “The Goopy Ghost at Valentine’s Day” is my favorite Goopy Ghost book of all; it isn’t an easy decision either! The explanation of Goopy’s origin from the mush inside a pumpkin is an image to get kids squealing; and that is just the beginning of this wildly imaginative tale that finally pairs Goopy up with “Mushy” and kids and adults can’t help laughing at this Goopy Loopy twist quite unexpected! Add a dash of Greek Mythology as well as a party with cake, red hearts “and sweet drinks” shared with Goopy’s new friend Mushy and it doesn’t have to be a holiday to be hit by Cupid’s arrow, just a willingness to accept those who may be a little different and real perseverance and optimism.
Should I give it away and tell exactly where Cupid’s arrow hit to produce Mushy? Here is a clue: it is not mud, chewing gum, or strawberries! Whoops! That was a close one! This book is guaranteed to be a favorite year-round and the run-away horses from Mars himself, really lends itself to many readings with the action-packed rhymes and vivid illustrations!

If Goopy Ghost didn’t have my heart before, he certainly does now, not to mention an entire classroom of second and third graders!
    Thank you Goopy,
    your fan forever~~willow rose

In this chapter of The Goopy Ghost Saga, its Valentine’s Day and Goopy is longing for kinship. With the assistance of Roman Gods, another fruit ghost is brought to life! Mushy, the spirit of a cantaloupe is given his name by Goopy. The duo briefly travel around the world after Mushy becomes startled and takes off on Mars’ prize horse, Goopy with Cupid chasing after him- on Mars’ chariot! The story concludes in a party, with the bunch having traditional valentines- cards and sweet-treats involved. This book is great, and as it is in all of the books in this series there are beautiful illustrations throughout.

“The Goopy Ghost at Valentine’s Day” shows the importance of and the difficulty in creating lasting friendships. This delightful mix of Roman mythology (Cupid, Mercury and Mars) and two fantastic ghosts (Goopy and Mushy) carries the reader south to find a suitable fruit that Cupid can make into a friend for Goopy. The resulting friendship begins with chaos and turmoil, but the two ghosts eventually celebrate Valentine’s Day in a way that tickles the funny bone and warms the heart. True friendship really does not require the help of magic. Perfect for boys or girls!

My daughter delights in Goopy getting a new friend on this special day. My son loves the chase scene. I love the interest that this story gave all of us in exploring the mythology behind Valentine’s Day. We looked up Goopy’s Roman God friends and learned a lot! Thank you V. R. Duin for this wonderful tale!

I found that Goopy Ghost series to be a fun read for me students and my grandchildren.
In Goopy Ghost at Valentine’s Day love is in the air. Goopy wanted a friend to share his Valentine’s Day with. He seeks the help of Cupid and his magical heart arrows. Cupid traveled far and wide on his quest to help Goopy.
My favorite passage comes at the end, ” Finally, back at the garden it was time for Valentine’s cheer- A happy end to their mission with everyone now safely here!”
“That friends and family matter the most is equally true for a little Ghost.”

I found the story quite endearing, cute, and adventurous with all the characters, including Cupid, Mars, and Mercury. I like the story, the incorporation of a canteloupe, and how that developed. The writing is great, it’s clever, it’s fun, and on point with great rhyme. I sincerely recommend this book, as it has positive content and story. The words and the rhymes will land well with young readers as they will want to read the book again and again bringing them joy, love, and fun.
